My familiarity with Rabbit Cult was a very slow burn, starting from my old Musicalypse days, when I heard about a band called Saruru that I took to be sort of anime/kawaii girl-power metal act. It sounded interesting, but since my backlog of bands to check out is endless, I hadn’t gotten around to it. I remembered they existed when Frozen Factory played at Tiivistämö in February, as that was the first show since I started following Frozen Factory where their drummer, Marianne Heikkinen, was actually performing with them. She had arrived with a girl who looked familiar to me, who turned out to be Salla-Marja Hätinen, her partner-in-crime (or at least partner-in-music) from Saruru, which thus reminded me that the band existed.
I looked them up afterwards and found the song “Girls,” which just felt… good. However, I only had the chance to listen to it once or twice before Saruru changed their name and look to Rabbit Cult, and the song was dropped from streaming services shortly thereafter. Since then, however, now that I knew that Frozen Factory’s drummer was part of this act, I’ve been keenly following along with them, and the more I learn, the more interested I become in their art, especially since the release of the very provocative “Cute AF”! When I then saw their first interview and realized that they hadn’t done more of them, I immediately wanted to have them as Off the Record guests!
